Market Day ~ Mid-Season Bounty

Summer’s Plentiful Gifts

Peaches are the latest fruit ripe at the market!  Also available are loads of varieties of berries, including blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries (I tasted a tayberry last week - a cross between blackberry and raspberry) as well as cherries (Vans and Rainiers), nectarines and apricots.

The tasty bounty continues in the veggie department with snow peas, fava beans, sugar snap peas, lettuce (romaine, oak, butter, romaine), turnips, radishes, green garlic, garlic scapes (aka whistles), carrots, potatoes, fresh herbs, fennel, rainbow chard, shallots, cucumbers, zucchini, fresh onions, arugula, cabbage, carrots, beets, radishes, tomatoes and much more!

For more on this Wednesday’s selection of Interstate Farmers’ Market vendors, please see the list below.  For more information about peaches in the area, check out Tri-County Farm-Fresh Foods.

We’re always looking for volunteers during Wednesdays to help run the market each week…  Volunteers work 2-3 hour shifts between 3:00 - 8:00 pm and we could really use a few people to help with breakdown from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.

Entertainment:
I’ve lined up a special treat for you this week with
Liza Jane and Curly performing classic country songs of love and woe, with a smidgeon of blues, jazz, ragtime, modern miscellany and a few originals thrown in for good measure.

As Miss Liza Jane is a dear friend of mine, I am looking forward to a lovely afternoon with Liza Jane and Curly a-sangin’ and a-twangin’…

See you on Wednesday!

Market Day ~ Behind the scenes…

Farmers’ Markets growing in Portland

There are many factors contributing to a successful farmers’ market and seeing the thriving markets in Portland (as well as the country) points to the fact that many people are wanting local and fresh food.  The Interstate Farmers’ Market has developed great relationships with farmers and vendors to bring food to N/NE neighborhoods every Wednesday for the past 3 1/2 years.

News of farmers’ markets growth in Portland is due to the resources of the Oregon Farmers Market Associationand the cooperation of market managers helping new markets (and new market managers) get started.  Volunteers and support from local communities are crucial to the success of bringing food ever closer to home.

I am looking forward to sharing more updates about developments of farmers’ markets in the N/NE Portland area.  St Johns is planning for a new market to start in 2009. Other markets are being presented to neighborhoods as a way to grow their own food, develop jobs and enhance community.  We’re all contributing to the shift in how we view our food…

For more on this Wednesday’s selection of Interstate Farmers’ Market vendors, please see the list below.  To get involved with the Interstate Farmers’ Market (as a volunteer, vendor or supporter), please contact me by phone or email.

Market Day ~ Ah summer!

Food for the 4th!
Join us every Wednesday (3:00-7:00 pm)

Summer has finally arrived and the scene at IFM last week was brilliant! 30 vendors are selling everything from fruits and veggies to tamales and pizza and jams to bread. We are still looking for more customers (1500 last week), so please send this email to your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc.

I would love to double our attendance by the end of the season, so help get the word out!

Seems to be something for everyone at the market…gluten-free pastries and bread, produce, honey, treats, the balloon man, kids playing and singing at the IFM stage and much more. ALSO, scores of kids are playing in the park all summer with Portland Parks FREE “Summer in the Parks” program. (This program is free and pre-registration is not required, so show up and have fun with your kids - this is not a daycare option, so please stay with your children.)

Please contact me to sign up for a volunteer shift on Wednesdays by email or phone. I would love to have help during the market from 3:00 - 7:00 pm and could really use a few people to help with breakdown from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Check out the shifts below and contact me today!

Peace!
