Market Day ~ Free Pizza for IFM Volunteers

Did he say free pizza?
Yes, he did…every Wednesday!

Introducing al Forno Feruzza

Volunteers with the Interstate Farmers’ Market will receive pizza on Wednesdays from al Forno Feruzza!  Stephen Ferruzza opened up a pizza cart downtown and is now selling Sicilian pizza and fresh baked bread every week at the Interstate Farmers’ Market.

From foodcartsportland.com:
Pizza aficionados usually agree that one of the most important parts of the pizza is the crust, and Ferruzza makes a crust to rival that of the best in Portland. Equipped with a real pizza oven that gets up to 700 degrees F, a true slow risen dough, and a touch that only a passionate and true baker can have, his crust is a perfect balance between crusty and soft, thin in the right spots and thick around the fat edges, and has little air bubbles and the occasional spot of char on the bottom indicating it was made in the traditional and proper manner. It’s pretty darn close to a slice of heaven if you ask me.

People that have tried al Forno Feruzza at the Interstate Farmers’ Market are also raving about the pizza and fresh baked bread baked from ovens that Stephen has installed in the back of a renovated school bus.  Look for the bus located close to the music stage at the market.

Please contact me to sign up for a volunteer shift on Wednesdays by email or phone.  I would love to have help during the market from 3:00 - 7:00 pm and could really use a few people to help with breakdown from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.  Check out the shifts below and contact me today!

Thanks in advance for helping at the market!

Market Day ~ This Week at IFM

The Sweetest Market in Town

Delicious, simply delicious…
Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Wednesday starts a week-long stretch of warmer and drier weather as farmers and Northwesterners are anticipating the sunny days of summer. We’ll have over 20 vendors this week, including 3 farms sharing their fruits and vegetables.

Sweet Leaf Farm will again be bringing greens, carrots, beets, spanish onions, collards, berries and more. Deep Roots Farm will provide the peas, lettuce, basil, greens and strawberries. Unger Farms is selling strawberries by the pint or 1/2 flat.

Sample the goodies from Carol’s Nuts and Candies and try the oven baked breads from Al Forno Ferruzza (they will be back with pizza next week - tamales and barbeque will be available this week). You have to check out the many flavors of cheesecake from Heavenly Bites (see picture at right with owner Elizabeth Aldez and her daughter, Vanessa). Their cheesecake is amazing and I’m not the only one saying so…

Volunteer opportunities are available every Wednesday to
help during the market (especially set up and break down times), so please contact me to get involved - see volunteer list below and send to your friends!

With a sunny smile,
Bob New, IFM Manager

Market Day ~ A Community Market…

The 2008 IFM Season has started out a bit slowly and we need your help to pick up the pace a bit. Due to a rainy and cold last couple of weeks, attendance has been much less than we are hoping to support the local businesses that sell at the market.

A local market needs a community to support it through many means - purchasing food, volunteering and sharing the market with friends and family (make it a date!). Check out our expanded list of volunteer opportunities that include more planning for sustaining the market as a community. IFM vendors are providing a great selection of produce, jams, flowers, prepared foods, meats, fish, dog treats and bakery items that are gluten-free as well as sugar-free.

Although most farmers are behind schedule on providing local food to markets due to the lack of sunshine, Sweet Leaf Farms (picture above) has been providing a great selection of produce grown from the southern Willamette Valley (near Eugene) and has been left with much produce at the end of the day… Let’s help them sell out so their trip back home is a lot lighter!

More farmers that have sold at IFM in previous years are coming back in the next few weeks as their crops grow with increasing days of sunshine (Baird Farms, Creative Growers, Deep Roots Farm, Liepold Farm, Unger Farms are some familiar names for IFM customers).

We would really love to have more volunteers help during the market (especially set up and break down times), so please contact me to get involved - see volunteer list below and send to your friends!

Come support the market (even if it’s raining)!

See you at the Market!
Bob New, IFM Manager
